Location 1: Kamakhya Temple
Kamakhya Temple holds a significant position in Guwahati.
Noted among the oldest Shakti Peethas, the temple is sacred to
Goddess Kamakhya, who is believed to be the essence of female
energy. Legend has it, the yoni or creative organ of Sati fell
here when Vishnu, in a bid to save the world from Shiva's tandavanrittya,
cut her dead body into 51 pieces with his suddarshan chakra. The temple
is a natural cave with a spring. There's no idol of the Goddess, rather
an image of the yoni of the deity. Matra Yoni, draped in a silk sari and
covered with flowers, is housed in the dark chamber of the temple. It is
suggested to dress modestly while visiting the temple.
Location 2: Umananda Temple
Located on Peacock Island and surrounded by the mighty Brahmaputra River,
Umananda Temple is a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple was built
in 17th century by the Ahom king Gadadhar Singha. One can reach the temple
by taking a ferry from Guwahati, sailing through the waters of the mighty
Brahmaputra. Devotees visit this temple to worship the presiding deity,
Umananda, a manifestation of Lord Shiva. The temple sits on top of a hill
called Bhasmachala, from where visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty of the
surroundings. Maha Shivratri and Shiva Chaturdashi are important festivals
celebrated at this temple.
Location 3: Umiam Lake

activities here. The lake also boasts of a garden named as Lum Nehru Park
near its shore that elevates the beauty of the place. Located 17 km away
from Shillong, the lake was constructed as the first Hydel Power Project
in this North-East Indian State.

phenomenon of a boulder balancing on another rock. The 100% literacy rate of the
village allows tourists to converse easily with the villagers and understand the
significance of the place even better. Enjoy a cup of tea and some snacks on the
local shops located inside the village area to end the tour on a flavourful note.
Location 2: Single Decker Living Root-Bridge
Single-layered living root bridges in Meghalaya are amazing structures that have
grown for several years. Made of tangled thick roots and joining two banks of
streams, a walk on the single living root bridges is an experience of a lifetime.
Created by the entanglement of roots grown from ancient rubber trees, these bridges
are shaped and trained by the people of the Khasi Tribe. According to locals, the
bridges were constructed to cross the overflowing stream during monsoon. A UNESCO
world heritage site, each bridge can up to 50 people in one go. It is suggested
to wear comfortable shoes, as the tour to Single Decker Living Root Bridges requires
a lot of walking.

Location 1: Dainthlen Waterfall
Dainthlen Falls is about 2 km from Cherrapunji on the Shillong - Cherrapunji route. Dropping
from a height of 80-90 meters, the fall comes into full-swing in the monsoon months. According
to a local legend, the fall derived its name from the Demon Python (Thlen) which was consumed
with corruption, greed and evil. Some brave men slaughtered the snake right next to the fall,
ending its reign of terror. Some of the natural rock carvings depicting this episode can be
seen around the fall, and are quite enthralling. Car itineraries usually do not include an
extended stop here, therefore keep a look out while you pass by this attraction.

Park or a road that connects Cherrapunji to the Bangladesh border.
It is a seasonal waterfall and best time to visit here is during the monsoon season.
Located at a distance of 5 km from Cherrapunjee, Nohkalikai Waterfall is one of the most
popular tourist attractions gushing down from a height of 1100 feet. Since the waterfall
is located amidst a dense jungle and cuts through a cliff, a distantly located viewpoint
allows the visitors to admire its panoramic views. According to the legend, the waterfall
is named after a woman named Ka Likai who unknowingly ate the flesh of her of own daughter
believing that her husband had cooked her a considerate meal. After realizing, she killed
herself by jumping into the waterfall. A fair amount of walking is required to reach the

Location 4: Elephant Falls
Originally known as the Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew (three stepped waterfalls) by the
Khasi people, Elephant waterfalls are well-known for their startling beauty. The fall
derived its name from an elephant shaped rock located near the waterfall, which later
got destroyed in an earthquake.
Continuing with the name, the water falls down from three tiers, the first fall is concealed with the
tress, the second fall is quite gentle and the third fall harbors dynamically flowing crystal clear
waters. Located at a distance of 12.6 km from Shillong, the falls are one of the major tourist spots
offering options to enjoy tea and snacks while admiring nature.
Location 5: Mawsmai Cave
A striking natural phenomenon, Mawsmai cave is one of the most visited attractions of Cherrapunji.
The cave is an ideal location for history and nature lovers to observe and learn about the facts
of nature. Limestone structures formed in the cave leave its visitors awestruck. The entrance of
the cave is dark and wide whereas the exit of the cave is small. Feel amazed as you observe the
merging of floor and roof through stone pillars. Constantly dripping roofs along with the formations
of stalactites and stalagmites offer an unforgettable view to capture. Car itineraries usually do
not include an extended stop here, therefore keep a lookout while you pass by this attraction.
