Sightseeing in Thimphu.
Location 1: Tashichho Dzong
Tashichho Dzong has been serving as the seat of the Bhutanese government since 1952,
when King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk moved the capital to Thimphu.
It presently includes the throne room and offices of the king,
secretariat, and the ministries of home affairs and finance.
It is located next to the gleaming waters of Wang Chhu River,
close to Thimphu town.
The impressive architecture and well-kept garden leave one awestruck. The original structure was built in the year 1216 AD, but the entire building has undergone many natural and man-made disasters and hence been reconstructed many times. It was also expanded in the later years. This Dzong is one of the largest and most famous landmarks of Thimphu.
Location 2: National Memorial Chorten
The iconic National Memorial Chorten rests in the serenity of nature,
close to the Thimphu city centre. The white-washed structure topped
with a golden pinnacle was erected in the memory of the Third Druk
Gyalpo and is dedicated to world peace. Buddhist believers also call it
the “Seat of Faith” or “Mind of Buddha”. The excellent Buddhist architecture,
marvellous paintings, and sophisticated sculptures are bound to leave one spellbound.
One may often find locals circumambulating the Stupa in ritual prayer, especially early
in the morning or in the evening. Car itineraries usually do not include an extended stop here,
therefore keep a lookout while you pass by this attraction.

fertility shrine which is claimed to be built by Lama Drukpa Kunley
(aka Divine Mad Man) in the 15th century. The Tantric- Buddhist saint is,
still, regarded for his known wisdom in Bhutan. Childless couples go to the
temple to receive a blessing or empowerment from the saint. It is a 20-minutes
long pleasant walk from the road at Sopsokha to the temple, therefore, it is suggested
to wear comfortable shoes. En-route, you would also pass by an archery ground.
Since this is a religious site, please dress appropriately for your visit.
Location 3: Punakha Dzong
Standing majestically on an island between the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers,
Punakha Dzong is one of the most photogenic of all of Bhutan's ancient fortresses. The dzong joins
the mainland by an arched wooden bridge and houses many precious relics from the days when successive
kings reigned the kingdom from this valley. The architecture is dramatic as well as impressive with thick
white-washed walls and an intricate pinnacle. It is said to be the most impressive building in the whole
country which served as a government until the mid-1950.
The unusual structure of 3 Docheys, instead of 2,
makes it stand out.
